Music as a Tool For Social and Urban Transformation

How does solidarity translate into the planning of cultural projects and music festivals? Can music be a tool for social transformation? How can long term musical and cultural projects enhance the image of cities and help them regenerate? 

This panel examines solidarity through cultural projects on the urban scale. Four cities take us through their different projects and approaches to talk about the transformative experience that ties music and communities together with social and environmental issues. Carolina Rojas talks about how the city Medellin in Colombia became a model of urban transformation and social resilience, while Nadja Grizzo, Friderika Mike and Asta Salomaa talk about how being the European Capital of Culture can be an opportunity for a city to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits, foster urban regeneration and raise the city’s visibility and profile on an international scale.
