In 2008, the Iranian/Canadian vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Golnar Shahyar settled in Vienna. She has since become known as one of Europe’s most accomplished contemporary and improvised vocalists, as well as a composer and producer of her own music and a collaborator in dance, theater, and Opera projects. She is a tireless advocate of EDI (Equity, diversity, inclusion) in the music industry and has succeeded in making this passion an integral part of her work – whether as a solo artist under the name GolNar or with groups like Gabbeh, or Golnar and Mahan Trio. Her music, an extraordinary blending of languages and styles, draws equally on the traditions of South/West Asia, North Africa, and the contemporary music of Europe and the Americas; her music-making is a political act in and of itself. Shahyar teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts and holds creative singing workshops internationally. She also works as a curator of music and human rights-related events.
